Current Work
Lauria provides training and technical assistance for teachers and adult education program administrators primarily in the areas of ESL, ESL Standards, ESL curriculum, IELCE, evidence-based reading instruction, and digital literacy. As the ALRC has moved into distance learning, she has been involved with creating and delivering online and hybrid professional development courses and training. She is the state lead for BEST Plus training in Illinois.
Past Projects
Laurie served on the national team of the Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) federal initiative and has provided training on STAR and evidence-based reading instruction in Illinois as well as in other states. She is the co-author of Community Connections: Education for Involved Communities, an EL-Civics curriculum produced under a federal grant. She has developed and conducted online and in-person training on the curriculum and other civics content for EL-Civics teachers to implement the Illinois EL-Civics Competencies. As part of a federal research project funded by the National Institute for Health, Testing the Impact of Health Literacy, she co-wrote a multilevel health literacy curriculum and conducted statewide training on it. In addition, she researched and contributed several supplementary modules for the ELCivicsOnline website project.
Experience
Laurie holds a master’s degree in Linguistics/TESOL. She taught an EBRI class in a local program for several years and is currently teaching an ESL class. She has worked in adult education for more than 30 years as an administrator, teacher, professional developer, and volunteer.
